Smart Match…. You’ve been invited…. Will you accept? Phrases that cross my screen and make me feel excited, hopeful, wanted. Will it really be a good match? Will we be compatible? Will this be a one time thing or will this be an on-going relationship?

No, I’m not talking about messages sent by a dating website. I’m married and not currently looking for another relationship. But these are phrases that anyone who plays word games on their smartphone may recognize.

I’ve played these games with my friends and colleagues. I’ve played with my husband, my siblings and even my children. Yet currently, my favorite opponent is someone I’ve never met.

The phone app matched us up. Choosing to start a game this way can be somewhat of a risk. Sometimes this so called “smartmatch” is anything but smart. Sometimes, I am so outmatched it is embarrassing and honestly, I’m grateful for the anonymity . Sometimes, a game with a random opponent can be downright boring and I find myself shaking my head at the phone thinking, “Really? This was the best you could do?” But when the smartmatch is done well, when it is truly a smart match, it can become absolutely addicting.
